All about the woman, the author and Mauritius…

Q & A with Cassandra

What originally inspired What’s it gonna be?

I have to say that I was inspired by real things that were going on in my life and in the lives of people around me at the time, things I found funny or worth sharing, things that inspired me into imagining all sorts of possible outcomes around those events and which then led to my idea of writing a book. However, it is in no way an autobiography of anyone’s life! Although there may be a few basic truths here and there which I have kept because it fitted into the story, almost everything is made up, exaggerated, altered, used in a different context, made more funny or ridiculous, and just adapted to fit into the story where I decided I wanted it to.

It’s true that there is a lot of me in Lucy’s personality, and my husband’s personality in Matt, but it’s not our life story, it’s really theirs. That’s what I love about writing – you take an initial idea or notion and then you take it anywhere you want to in any way you choose to!

How would you sum up What’s it gonna be in a single sentence?

Fun, romantic, funny, honest and heartfelt…

What did you enjoy most about writing What’s it gonna be?

It’s a lot of fun making the characters be exactly who you want them to be. It’s wonderful to have control over how the story goes – a control you definitively don’t have in real life. It’s funny because you grow fond of your characters and almost feel like you’re stepping into their lives. It’s also sometimes unexpected as the story or the characters suddenly take you down a path or into a conversation you initially had no idea would take place!

Did you always want to be a writer?

No, not as in writing a book as such, but I’ve always loved writing and wrote diaries all through primary school and high school. Then when I travelled I wrote travel diaries but not in the “We went to visit the Eiffel tower today” style, but more along the lines of a running commentary on my thoughts, feelings and observations of everything around me. I’ve always written pretty much as I speak and as if I’m talking to someone! So although I didn’t really think I’d ever write a book, I’ve always loved writing.

Would you love to be a full-time author or would you miss your other life?

If I could live off writing, I would definitively do it.

What’s next – are you working on any new novels?

I’ve just finished the first draft of my second book and am working on the rewriting… It’s another romantic comedy set for the most part in Mauritius but with the last few chapters taking place in Perth, Western Australia. It doesn’t have anything to do with “What’s it gonna be?” but is the same genre. It’s very exciting and I can’t wait to get it finished.
