Reading Habits Book Tag

on September 4, 2015

Hi everyone!

I came across this lovely Reading Habits tag on Amanda’s blog Chocolate pages who in turn had been tagged on it by Amy and Karen… I thought it was fun and decided to join in 🙂

So here goes…

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I love reading on/or in my bed, which I have to say, is the comfiest bed ever 🙂 I plump up the pillows and make myself comfortable and in winter I snuggle under the covers – pure bliss. I used to read outside or on the veranda but now I like lying down when reading (becoming lazy in my old age!!)

However, when we’re down at the beach cottage, I love reading on the beach in the afternoon on my bean bag , with the sound of the waves lapping on the shore in the background…

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

untitledI’m a major stationary junkie and it extends to bookmarks! I just love buying bookmarks but I’m really hopeless with them as I always seem to forget to use them or I just lose them! I tend to just remember where I am in the book or otherwise I stick an old receipt or whatever I find lying around as a bookmark. With the Kindle now it’s easier, but I still love paper books above all else.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter / a certain amount of pages?

I really need to finish a chapter. It’s almost like an obsessive compulsive disorder 🙂 Just impossible to stop halfway through!

Do you eat or drink while reading?

I love having a cup of coffee while reading in the morning or afternoon.

But in the evening, nothing like a glass of red wine with a good book.

As for eating, I avoid eating while reading as I’m such a child when it comes to eating that I would just mess up my book!!

Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

I’ve learnt to completely zone out (due to very noisy kids!!) so it doesn’t bother me that the TV is on or that music is playing while I read. However, I wouldn’t choose to have either on if I had the choice.

Reading at home or everywhere?

I usually read at home but if I go to doctor’s appointments or places where I know I will have to wait, then I definitely take my book with me. And If we go away for the day or the weekend, my book’s the first thing I pack!

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Definitely silently in my head – I think my husband would go crazy if I started reading out loud!! He already has to deal with my sudden bursts of laughter when he least expects it while I’m reading!!!

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

I often skip pages or skim read bits and pieces now – long descriptions, sex scenes… I guess I like staying with the characters and the action so if there are bits that I just feel aren’t important I skip or skim read. I also realise that I’ve been doing this since I got my Kindle – I rarely skipped pages or skim read when I read paper books.. Strange that actually?!

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

imagesCAQWYJ6Jhmmm… as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a bit of a messy eater/drinker/person and do sometimes dirty my books without meaning to (sand, sunscreen, coffee, chocolate, diet coke…) This said, I don’t destroy them, write in them or tear them, especially since I love my books and often enjoy re-reading them. Let’s just say that I would be able to sell them second hand without a problem but I would definitely not be able to bring a book back to the bookshop pretending that I hadn’t read it 🙂

Do you write in your books?

imagesCAG14CMONever! Notebooks are there for that. I am completely against writing in books.

So, there you! That’s my answers for you 🙂

Would love to read your comments so let me know if you tag it onto your blog or even just your thoughts in the comments below. If any of you actually have a special reading chair or reading spot, I’d love to hear about or even see a photo!

I look forward to reading your posts girls.

Happy Reading!

    Very interesting post!

The reason you have noticed that you skim while reading on a tablet (iPad, Kindle, what-have-you) is that we all scan when we read anything on a monitor/display/screen. Researchers have determined this and web developers who are especially concerned with the User Interface (UI) must take that into account when designing the look of a web page. A page full of text with no white space or figures or images nearly guarantees your web visitor will read the first paragraph or so, possibly skim quickly looking for more information and then they are off. There are studies about how long a visitor stays on one page. This information is easily obtained from web logs that are automatically created on web servers.

I probably just put you into a coma. I apologize if that is the case. 😇

You live on a tropical island! I figured you were of British persuasion (possibly Canadian, British or Australian) based on spelling of,certain words.
